GIVEAWAY IS OUT TO WIN AGAIN

- SAM FLANAGAN

SHE had three different trainers before her sixth career start and was written off as no good because of a niggling back problem.

Now Our Recipe could smash through the $100,000 prizemoney mark today at Cluden Park. The eight-year-old mare is trained by Ronald Finch, who took a liking to the injury-prone youngster when no one else did.

“She’s the first horse I had and she was a giveaway,” Finch said.

“Years ago when she was just a maiden I told my mate who owned her, Trevor Kyle, I wanted her when he was done. There was something about her, I just liked her. She was nice and quiet. She had some back issues … she would always go sideways but we got some acupuncture for her and that fixed it up.”

After a lacklustre start to her career, Our

Recipe has now recorded 10 victories alongside 18 placings. Finch said the mare by Churchill Downs was a model of consistency trainers dreamed of.

“You’d take a stable full of honest horses like her if you could, she’s just so good,” he said. “She’s beaten horses people have paid $40,000 or $50,000 for. Not bad for a little giveaway from the bush.”

Finch had retired the star of his stable last year, before a change of heart saw her return to the track.

“I was going to send her to Love Conquers All but they moved him to stand in Melbourne,” he said. “She was playing around in the paddock and looked well so I decided to put her back in work.”

Today she’ll line up in the Benchmark 75 over 1000m with Bonnie Thompson in the saddle.
