Basketball players get ready to roll

- NICK WRIGHT

WHEN the day comes they can take the court, Townsville Basketball will be ready.

With the help of Jobkeeper the organisation has been able to rehire its staff to give Townsville Stadium a touch up for when their fans and members are welcomed back.

No date has been set yet for when the local competition can resume – that will be in the hands of the government.

But Townsville Basketball general manager Mark Wrobel said when that announcement comes they will simply need a couple of weeks for players to prepare.

“We haven’t gone with the attitude of setting a date because we think that’s presumptuous,” Wrobel said.

“Thankfully when we stopped we were mid-season, so effectively once we get permission we’ll be picking up where we left off from.

“There’ll be some potential re-juggling but that’ll depend on how much longer we’re out for.

“But as we stand at this point we’re still trying to get most of the season in.

“We haven’t tried to jump the gun, we’re ready once we get a tick off.”

Wrobel said the fact Townsville Basketball typically plays all year around meant they inevitably clashed with other sports, regardless of the situation.

With that in mind, he said basketball should not be dramatically affected by other codes changing their season dates.

The next phase on the organisation’s agenda is whether the junior state championships will proceed as planned, with a decision to be made on May 22.

The under 12’s format is set to take place in Townsville from July 7 to July 10.
