A MAGNETIC Island mother and tour operator is making this year’s Mother’s Day one to remember while doing her bit during lockdown.

Big Mama Sailing owner Lisa Sampson is part of the Townsville Enterprise campaign, Buy Now, Holiday Later encouraging Townsville to support local businesses.

The campaign has been designed to provide operators immediate cash support by encouraging the purchase of online gift cards to use when restrictions are lifted.

Ms Sampson is pairing a Big Mama Sailing Sunset Sail voucher with a bunch of flowers as a Mother’s Day gift in preparation for when restrictions are relaxed.

She said the two-hour sailing package was an opportunity to spoil mum while spending locally.

“Families are going to want to get together and celebrate their mother when lockdown is lifted and it is a present you can all do together later,” she said.

“This is a way to support local business at the same time because we are relying on our locals until borders are reopened.”

Ms Sampson has already sold three Sunset Sail packages and said the campaign was also an opportunity for Townsville to discover the outdoors.

“When all of this settles people need to spoil themselves as well and people should be jumping at these great deals,” she said.

“We have so much to explore in our backyard and so many people don’t even realise.”

The Buy Now, Holiday Later campaign has so far sold more than 100 packages across the North Queensland region helping to rebuild the $1.26 billion local tourism industry.

Townsville Enterprise Tourism and Events director Lisa Woolfe said global tourism leaders suggest the industry would play a pivotal role in rebuilding economies postCOVID-19.

“The tourism and hospitality industry is an essential component of our economy and lifestyle and we encourage anyone who wants to give back to visit townsvillenorthqueensland.com.au to review our selection of Buy Now, Holiday Later options,” she said.

“Take the pledge to play in our paradise by purchasing a holiday gift card.”

To date the campaign has generated $60,000 in sales to support local tourism and hospitality operators.
