Let us get on with it

-

I REFER to the article page 5 (TB 4/5) where the Health Minister Steven Miles tries to justify the North of the state being still in lockdown.

Some time ago, April 2 to be precise, the TB printed a letter sent to our illustrious Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk, signed by several health professionals (doctors) asking that the north of the state be cut off from the south. As we all know at that time the virus was rampant in the southeast corner.

The Premier unequivocally dismissed the request out of hand. One will remember at that time the north of the state was relatively virus free compared with the south.

As time went by the number of cases being reported daily in the south suggested that the virus was in epidemic proportions and out of control but still virtually none in the north compared to the south.

Then we had a person arrive at the Cairns Hospital from Brisbane of all places who apparently infected six people in a lab. Chief Medical Officer Jeannette Young said on ABC: “One month ago a technician went from Brisbane to Cairns and then when he returned to Brisbane was tested positive for COVID-19.”

Ms Young went on to say “We have confirmation it was in the lab.”

This could have gone two ways and as it happens we walked away from what could have been a very serious outbreak.

Thank you Premier, you walked away from that one without having to answer many awkward questions.

Now we come to today’s epistle from the minister where he advises that the Government was hesitant to ease restrictions in areas that had no cases because the messaging would be inconsistent.

He, like the others in the Palaszczuk Government, takes the electorate for fools. Minister, advise your lord and master Annastacia if there are no cases of virus here in the North close the gate south of Rockhampton and open the North up.

As far as we here in the North are concerned there is no need to learn new restrictions. Just close the gate and let us get on with it.

One has to wonder if the virus was rampant here in the north and the southeast had been spared the epidemic as we apparently have, would we have been able to travel into Brisbane for business?

And with regards to our health professional, Dr Jeannette Young, I for the life of me cannot understand why four aeroplanes could not take part in the Anzac commemorations on Anzac Day.

All four pilots were in different cockpits. The only common denominator of all four would have been the aircraft refueller.

The exercise could quite possibly be characterised as being non-essential but people have been driving to work during the lockdown.

The English seemed to have gotten a couple off the ground to commemorate the 100th birthday of Captain Tom Moore, now honorary Colonel. So did the Americans. They apparently conducted a fly-past of military jets to acknowledge the magnificent effort of the health workers.

Must be different air space? DAVID THOUMINE,

Cranbrook.
