New service station fuels big savings

- MICHAEL THOMPSON

TOWNSVILLE’S newest service station has hit the ground running, selling unleaded fuel at 87.9c a litre.

Liberty Oil on Charters Towers Rd opened for business over the weekend and is already proving popular with motorists, who formed queues to fill their tanks with the cheap fuel.

Work on the service station started midway through last year, and its completion has come as a welcome positive for residents still doing it tough during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Liberty Oil plans to open two more sites in Idalia and Thuringowa as part of a $15 million splurge on Townsville, which could create up to 60 jobs. United Hermit Park, also on Charters Towers Rd, was the other local service station to drop to 87.9c per litre.

It has been years since local motorists have seen prices drop below 90c a litre, and RACQ spokesperson Renee Smith urged drivers to keep buying from the businesses selling cheap fuel.

“Motorists have a part to play in helping keep prices low by supporting the fuel companies offering the lowest prices,” she said.

“Motorists should use apps like the RACQ Fair Fuel Finder to make sure they’re visiting the most competitive sites and getting the best deal possible.

“Global oil prices have been low for several weeks now, which is a major contributing factor to the low unleaded petrol price in Townsville.”

Townsville’s next cheapest fuel was at the United stores on Ingham Rd, Bayswater Rd and Ross River Rd, which sold at 97.9c a litre, and Puma was seen selling at 98.9c a litre.

The vast majority of service stations in Townsville were selling at 99.9c a litre yesterday, with the region’s average sitting at 100c a litre.

“The terminal gate price has been increasing slowly the past few weeks, but Townsville’s average price has continued to fall,” Ms Smith said. “Based on RACQ’S Fair Fuel website, a fair price today in Townsville is 100c per litre.”
