Questions remain as players hit the ground

- MATTHEW ELKERTON

TOWNSVILLE’S AFL clubs are holding out for the green light from AFL Queensland to resume training as the state eases COVID-19 restrictions this weekend.

Players will be able to do non-contact training in groups of 10 from Saturday with several clubs already planning to meet up after a long lay-off.

But it will mean clubs will need to think outside the box when it comes to setting up training schedules for their players.

“We might have to send some blokes off for a run while the rest of us kick the ball around, there might be some who never come off the run,” University Hawks coach Tyler Fidoe said with a laugh.

“One of the lads posted on Facebook when the announcement came and said he better go for a run now training is starting up. I hope he has been on more than one.”

But the physiotherapist said he was confident his players had put in the hard yards during the COVID-19 shutdown.

“I know a few boys have been doing Castle Hill Rd and Mt Stuart, and there have been a few getting down to The Strand for a few runs,” he said.

“It has been pretty hard for the boys. You train and build toward the start of the season and we were a week out before it all got pulled. It will be good to get the boys back together and building those relationships again before we get into some team and structure work.”

A decision on the AFL Townsville season is expected to come from the state body in the next week following a decision on the elite level this week.
