Chat show gets off to winning start Coach with lots to say

- MICHAEL THOMPSON

TOWNSVILLE rugby league coach Cameron Miller is making waves in a whole new game.

Miller has launched his Spilla’s Sports Show on social media and is already proving to be a natural talent when it comes to landing big interviews, with the likes of Wally Lewis, Mark Geyer and rising NRL talent Tom Flegler already making appearances on his show.

A genuine rugby league man with 30 years’ experience in coaching and development, Miller has made a vast network of contacts during his footy career that started in Tully.

“I’ve always been interested in broadcasting and commentary; when I was young I’d score footy and cricket games, and I guess I’m a closet journalist,” Miller said.

“I’ve always been interested in that side of the game, and doing little bits of media has been a hobby of mine.

“I have two mates in Brisbane who do a footy chat show, and it got me interested in doing my own North Queensland version.

“It’s about promoting grassroots footy and giving the players and volunteers some exposure, and it’s my way of giving back to the game.”

Miller, who is taking a hiatus from coaching, has been a coach of local A-grade sides Burdekin and Centrals, and

been part of the coaching staff of Queensland Cup outfits the Townsville Blackhawks and Northern Pride.

He’s mates with some of the biggest names in North Queensland footy, and has seen plenty of NRL talent go through the local ranks.

It’s because of his long background in local footy that Miller has been able to land his big interviews just over a month into his new gig.

“I’m grateful to have met so many good people in rugby league and to have made those contacts,” Miller said.

“I pride myself on getting along with players, and at the end of the day they’re human beings.

“A lot of people don’t get to hear about their history and background, and what sacrifices they’ve had to make to get where they are.”

Spilla’s Sports Show is broadcast every Monday and Friday from 6pm.
