Marsters happy to help others shine

- MATTHEW ELKERTON ESAN MARSTERS

ESAN Marsters is the only player in the Cowboys outside backs yet to cross the stripe and he has been reminded of the fact by the club’s flyers fraternity.

But it does not faze the Kiwi international a bit.

In an off-season where the club picked up superstar Valentine Holmes and dynamo dummy-half Reece Robson, the signature of Marsters almost went under the radar. But the former Tiger was brought north to do a job, and he plans to keep doing it.

In a backline that was lacking spark last season, Marsters was brought in to be a dominant ball runner. He hits the line hard, breaks through tackles and has a remarkable ability to pop an offload and promote second-phase play.

Marsters sits second only to Eels backrower Ryan Matterson in offloads with 10 in three games this season and is in the top 20 for run metres, averaging 155m per game.

“I wanted to come up here and play my own footy – I feel like me offloading and running the ball, it helps the team out,” Marsters said.

“We have great ball runners with Jase (Taumalolo) and forwards like Macca (Jordan Mclean) and Josh

Mcguire. But any way I can help with the team, I will be happy with that.

“As long as I do my job I am pretty happy but it would be good to score some tries soon and join the club.”

The Cowboys returned from the break recharged and put the Titans to the sword in the second half last week, but there will be fewer favours against a willing Sharks side tomorrow night.

The Sharks are better than their 0-3 record would suggest, and Marsters said the Cowboys needed to be wary of the strike they possess.

“It has been pretty good for us to get back-to-back wins at the start of the year – we had that break and coming back last week to play was really good,” Marsters said.

“The Sharks are a good team and with the players they have got, they have a lot of strike around their edges.

“For us it is about going out there and playing our footy. We have been working really hard over the past couple of weeks getting our combinations right again and I feel we have done that.

“We have got a lot of strike around the park and having good middle forwards that lay the platform, it is easier for us backs to capitalise on that.”
