BABY BOUNCES MICAELA OFF COURT

- NICK WRIGHT

SHE may miss out on a tantalising WNBL season, but Micaela Cocks is excited for the chapter she is coming up to off the basketball court.

The 2019-20 Townsville Fire skipper and her partner, Blackhawks captain Sam Hoare, are expecting their first child in November.

Somewhat ironically, their due date falls on round one of the revamped WNBL series.

At this stage Cocks harbours a desire to return to the court in the near future, but in what capacity remains an unknown until the moment arrives.

“We’re so excited, obviously, but it wasn’t unexpected,” she said.

“I’ll miss being on the court, but I know on the other end if there’s ever a good time to be pregnant it’s when COVID is on because I’m not missing as much and I know it’ll all be worth it. “I have plans to return to the game for sure, but I’ve never had a child so I might have the baby in November and not want to return, or maybe just want to play QBL.

“I don’t know. I’m not making any direct decisions but at this time I’d want to return to the game.”

While it means the Fire will be on the search for a new captain, the club’s general manager Sam Pascoe said they were delighted with the news.

She said whether she was a player or a fan, Cocks would always be a part of the black and orange jersey.

“We’re extremely excited for Micaela. She’s been with the club for a long time and regardless of being a player she’ll be a figure with the club in some way,” Ms Pascoe said.
