MAKING MARK ON SCREEN

- MICHAEL THOMPSON

THE sky is the limit for a Townsville creative artist and producer making his mark on the silver screen.

Lyndon Berresford has seen his short film Watchtower, which follows the life of a military veteran turned homeless superhero impersonator, take out the general online category at The Telly Awards honouring video and television across the globe.

The film, which Mr Berresford produced, also scored two Daytime Emmy Award nominations and was featured at the Cannes Film Festival

“It all started when I was working on another short film about two-and-a-half years ago,” Mr Berresford said. “There would be people working on sets we found out later were homeless, and apparently there’s a few of these people in the film industry who go to work on set. Apparently a fair percentage of the people who work on the Hollystrip as impersonators are homeless, so we did a day in the life of one of them.”

The critically acclaimed film was the latest labour of love for Mr Berresford, who has been a graphic artist, illustrator and production designer for 22 years. He works by day as a creative director for AEC in Townsville, and there are times when his life takes a glitzy turn.

“It would have been about 3am when I got a call by my friend and director saying our film had been nominated for the Daytime Emmy Awards,” Mr Berresford said. “My wife and I were invited to the Cannes Film Festival … we walked the red carpet.” His recent projects have featured in several international film festivals including the prestigious Hollyshorts Film Festival, Disney|lucasfilm Fan Film Awards at Celebration Europe and in the Chinese Theatre in Hollywood.
