VETERAN KILLED
A VIETNAM War veteran who died in a tractor rollover has been remembered as a “lovely man”.
John Albert Smith, 75, a former soldier, was found dead at the Burdekin Veterans Deep Creek Retreat about 10.45am yesterday after a tractor that he was riding rolled over on the property.
Mr Smith was a sapper in the 17th Construction Squadron during his service in the war from 1967-68.
He has been remembered as a lovely, well-liked man.

A Queensland Police Service spokeswoman said the incident was workplace-related.
Mr Smith ( pictured) was a sapper in the 17th Construction Squadron during his service in the war from 1967-68. Vietnam Veterans Association of Australia Queensland state president Peter Hindle said he offered his family and friends his deepest sympathies on behalf of f the organisation.
“We offer our condolences to John’s family and loved ones and also extend it to members of the VVAA Burdekin,” he said.
“He was a lovely man, very nice and well liked. I found him a very p pleasant man and he was a nice man to associate with.”
The retreat is a project p of the Burdekin k Sub Branch of Vietnam Veterans and provides a safe environment e for veterans t to camp and relax. It is located on the banks of the Burdekin River, about an hour from Ayr.
