WENDY BREWS UP POLL WIN

- MICHAEL THOMPSON

GETTING to know the customer is just as important as getting the coffee right, says the winner of the Townsville Bulletin’s best barista poll.

The votes flooded in for a big field of popular local baristas, but it was Cuisine on Bowen cafe manager and barista Wendy Adamson who finished on top.

Ms Adamson has been a barista for three years and counts each day of serving coffee as a blessing.

“I’m the type of person who can’t sit in an office,” she said.

“I need to see and talk to people, and I like to see people happy.

“It’s not just about the coffee, it’s about the people you serve and I love it when customers become friends and you become a little part of their lives.

“There’ll be customers who come in during the week, and then on the weekend they bring their kids along, and it’s wonderful. I love the customers – that’s why I do it.”

Cuisine on Bowen, located along Bowen Rd, managed to keep trading during the worst of the COVID-19 pandemic by running a takeaway service, something which Ms Adamson said she was “incredibly grateful” for.

“Our customers looked after us during COVID-19,” she said.

“We didn’t close and we adapted to the circumstances, and it was our loyal customers who really helped us.”

Ms Adamson has worked at Cuisine on Bowen for about a year, and while she plans on running her own business one day, she is more than happy in her current role.

“In the future I’d like to do my own thing, but I’m very happy being the cafe manager and barista at Cuisine on Bowen,” she said.
