Bubble a big boost for region

-

QUEENSLAND could soon become part of a travel bubble with New Zealand and Townsville is primed and ready for an influx of Kiwis.

It’s a move that could pump almost

$12 million a year into the Townsville economy and support thousands of jobs.

It shouldn’t be difficult to sell us to the Kiwis, with Townsville the gateway to a plethora of exciting and fascinating experiences.

With no coronavirus cases for more than 60 days, Townsville should be high on the list for travelling New Zealanders looking for a warm getaway.

While the Kiwis shiver through their 10C days, Townsville residents are basking in the warm sun.

And the sun isn’t going away any time soon. From the Great Barrier Reef to rainforests, the rugged Outback and the “jewel in our crown”, Magnetic Island, the Townsville region has something to offer for every traveller.

And while Queensland remains a priority travel partner for the New

Zealand Government, Townsville should capitalise on the chance to showcase what the region has to offer.

With an international airport ready to go, it would be easy for the region to open up to our neighbours.

While Townsville Enterprise has said a direct route from New Zealand to Townsville would be ideal, a New Zealand-cairns-townsville connection could also help all of Northern

Queensland prosper in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.

With most international travel out of the question, this could be a chance for both Townsville and New Zealand residents to explore something new.

Aviation has been tipped as critical to the state’s recovery and frequent, affordable flights are key to helping our business community bounce back.

With more than 320 days of sunshine and access to some of Australia’s most iconic locations on our doorstep, there is no better place for a New Zealander to have an all-aussie adventure.
