Motorists face rising fuel prices

- MICHAEL THOMPSON

THE good times at the bowser are coming to an end for local motorists.

The average price for unleaded fuel in Townsville yesterday was 115.9 cents per litre, with the highest listed at 119.9c/l, according to online app Petrolspy.

Last month motorists were reaping major savings at local petrol stations when prices dropped to as low as 87.9c/l, with the average being 100c/l.

RACQ spokeswoman Renee Smith said prices were expected to keep rising in the coming weeks.

“Prices are slowly starting to rise in Townsville and across regional Queensland due to the global oil price bouncing back,” she said.

“In May the average price of ULP in Townsville dipped to 100c/l due to the huge drop in the price of global oil.

“Prices in Townsville and across regional Queensland usually take about six to eight weeks to respond to global market changes.”

The lowest cost unleaded fuel in Townsville yesterday was sold at United Hermit Park and Liberty Hyde Park, both on Charters Towers Rd, for 103.9c/l.

Most service stations in Ingham sold unleaded fuel for 111.9c/l yesterday, and the average price in the Burdekin was 111.4c/l.

In Charters Towers the average price per litre was 119.9c.

“Most fuel companies are charging 119.9c/l but motorists should aim to fill up for a cheap price of 111c/l or less and should use apps like the RACQ Fair Fuel Finder to fill up for the best price possible,” Ms Smith said.

Townsville average prices fell by 43.7c/l from 147.2c/l in November last year to 103.5c/l in May 2020.
