Brothers make a play for new recruits

- MATTHEW ELKERTON

BROTHERS Rugby Club is on a recruiting drive with the reboot of the townsville district rugby union season around the corner.

The club is aiming to bolster its female ranks as they prepare to be a powerful force in the 10-a-side game.

And with local rugby league on shaky ground, Brothers are ready to strike while the iron is hot.

“With league looking unlikely, we want to offer anyone who wants to get out for a run and play some contact sport to get involved with the vice-president Jamie Walker said.

“We know there are a lot of women out there who love contact sport, and will tend to play AFL, league and union. Now is the chance for them to get out on the field.”

The club returned to the training paddock at Ignatius Park College last week, with juniors hitting the field on Thursday night.

Walker said there were a few weary bodies following the early sessions, but it would quickly turn around ahead of an expected reboot of the competition club,” on July 11. “The big boys are struggling as you would expect, there has been a few who didn’t keep up their fitness work in the break,” Walker said.

“I think there is a few who preferred the meat pies and beers as opposed to hitting the hill. but they are just glad to be around their mates, the whole isolation piece it is hard. You join a club for the camaraderie and friendship, and that has been missing.”

The club received a big boost in the break with major sponsor ‘My Fortress’ committing to another season of supporting the club’s A grade side.
