Police hunt inmate after escape from prison farm

- SAM FLANAGAN

POLICE are still searching for an inmate who broke out of the Townsville Correctional Centre yesterday morning.

Queensland Police were notified Daryl Mclennan had absconded from the male prison farm about 4.30am.

Mclennan is serving four years and eight months for enter dwelling.

Mclennan faced court in November of 2018 for a terrifying burglary when he was armed with a cane knife.

Mclennan unlawfully entered a Denham St home on February 1 of that year, resulting in disastrous effects for one of the occupants, all so he could steal a car because he wanted to drive to Mackay.

A man who lived at the address with his parents woke to discover Mclennan standing on the deck of the home.

The man yelled at Mclennan and attempted to close the door to the house.

The court heard the then 19-year-old offender yelled back and attempted to force open the door with one hand while wielding a knife with the other.

The occupant managed to force the door closed and lock it before Mclellan ran downstairs and fled in the Audi.

He was picked up by police in Mackay the following day and made admissions to the offending.

Mclennan also revealed the location of the car, which was declared a write-off.

Mclennan has since fronted court on numerous other occasions.

A Queensland Police spokeswoman said they were working with Queensland Corrective Services to find Mclennan. He is described as 176cm tall, 96kg and a dark complexion. He has hazel eyes and dark brown hair.

In October last year Bodhi Johnson, who was serving six years for driving causing death, escaped from the Townsville Correctional Centre Low Security farm. He was arrested less than a week later after driving recklessly around town and crashing cars.
