$14m spurt lifts tradies
MORE than 380 workers from multiple trades are being engaged by one building firm to undertake a $14 million construction spurt in Townsville.
Woollam Constructions completed the $4.3 million JCU Central Plaza this year and is on track to hand over the new Townsville Women’s Centre later this year.
Last month it was selected to lead construction of The Oasis Townsville.
The state-of-the-art women’s centre is the result of a Townsville Bulletin campaign to replace a dilapidated Queenslander that had been home to the service.
More than 90 workers will be engaged in the centre’s construction.
About 160 workers are expected to be inducted for construction of The Oasis Townsville.
The facility is designed to provide a one-stop shop for veterans and their families to access assistance from government, health services, ex-service organisations and community groups.
Woollam Constructions Townsville regional manager Barry Styan said that it was satisfying to be involved in local community projects making such a difference to people’s lives.
“Woollam Townsville staff have been proud to be involved, from working on the projects themselves but also being active in fundraising drives for the women’s centre because they are aware of the positive work that happens there,” Mr Styan said.
He said that The Oasis had received multi-level government support with $5 million from the Federal Government on top of the State Government’s $4.3 million through the Department of Communities, Disability Services and Seniors.
“It’s very satisfying working with the State and Federal governments to create jobs and a facility that will benefit veterans, current defence personnel and their families,” he said.
