Club keen to play in Mackay
A TOWNSVILLE club could hoist the 2020 Rugby League Mackay and District A-grade premiership trophy.
With the Townsville District Rugby League season on shaky ground it appears one local club has already put the feelers out to RLMD chairman Adam Wright.
Wright would not confirm which clubs had been in touch or from which association, however it is understood at least one Townsville club has shown interest in travelling down the road to play footy.
“We’ve had interest from elsewhere to join the competition if their local competitions don’t go ahead,” Wright said.
Four senior clubs remain in the Mackay competition after Souths joined Sarina, Moranbah and Whitsunday in withdrawing from the season.
Wright said Souths had been in touch with him this morning to confirm their exit.
“It’s unfortunate but we respect their decision,” he said.
“They’ve made it in the best interests of their club.”
The chairman said he would be shocked if any of the four remaining clubs – Brothers, Carltons, Magpies Wests – followed suit pulled out.
“I’ve spoken to all the presidents in the past couple of days and they’re still keen to go ahead,” Wright said.
The RLMD board is expected to meet early next week to make a final decision on whether the season will go ahead. If it does, Wright promised there would be a premiership to play for.
“We’ll give clubs until the end of next week to notify us of how many teams they’ll be putting in – that’s more to do with the juniors,” Wright said. and and
