Poh still has some irons in the fire

- ANTIMO IANNELLA

IT ended in disappointment but Poh Ling Yeow achieved everything she wanted from her return to Masterchef Australia.

The fan favourite was eliminated from Ten’s reality cooking competition last night and while admitting to some sadness at her early exit after finishing runner-up in 2009, Poh said coming back for this year’s Back to Win series was worth it.

“I feel like I’m such an established brand, I really was there for my own journey as well, just to see how much I’ve grown and how I’d fare against such a stellar group of cooks,” she said.

“I got absolutely everything I wanted out of it, I just wish I had a few more cooks under my sleeve – it wasn’t even about the finale – I just wanted to show off a few more dishes.

As has been her trademark, Poh struggled to complete her final dish in time, Sardinian potato dumplings, and confessed to “doubting herself” during the elimination challenge.

“My head just got into a knot, there was so many recipes I could have cooked and executed perfectly in that time frame,” she says.

Poh said her aim during the competition wasn’t to create the perfect plate of food but rather showcase her culinary journey to Australia.

“The show proves time and time again, it’s really changed the foodscape in Australia,” she said.

“It was all about driving a cultural narrative and telling those cultural stories through my food, and showing a way of eating – not just a dish. That’s why I always tried to squeeze so many dishes into one cook.”

Poh also paid tribute to the Masterchef’s trio of new judges, in particular food critic Melissa Leong, whom she said brought “cultural and gender diversity” to the show.

“Melissa is just so eloquent and so passionate and so good at what she does. I have a lot of respect for her skillset, we really bonded over the cultural dishes,” she said.

“I think she has just brought a lovely feminine energy which has added such a different sensibility to that judging panel.”

Beyond Masterchef, Poh will focus her energies on her Jamface stall at Wayville’s Adelaide Farmers’ Market every Sunday, following the closure of her offering at the Adelaide Central Market.

“I want to stay true to the brand and that’s why we finished up at the cafe cause I felt like I was getting really lost in the drudgery of day to day business,” she said.

“I wanted to stay fresh and charming and beautiful and elusive and just focusing on that one day a week gives us so much more energy.”

An accomplished artist, Poh’s also reconnecting with her creative side. She’s working on some “very cool design projects” with homewares brand Mozi, while she’s planning to relaunch her art website.

“I’m going to start selling limited edition prints which is something I’ve been wanting to do for a decade now, and I’ve also got a book in the works as well so there’s lots on,” she said.
