Renewables are cheaper
GLENN White writes a terrific summary of Australia’s progress with renewable energy (Letters, 3/7), but another point could be made in relation to uranium and nuclear energy.
North Queensland First leader and Whitsunday MP Jason Costigan’s recent call to reopen uranium mining in Queensland does not stack up.
The Olympic Dam mine in South Australia has 80 per cent of Australia’s uranium with sufficient reserves for the next 80 years and the demand for a new mine is not there. The push for nuclear energy is also impractical.
A study by the CSIRO and the Australian Energy Market Operator, GenCost 2019-20, confirms wind and solar, including the cost of battery storage, are the cheapest technologies for Australia, now and into the future, and much cheaper than the technologies promoted by the Government – gas, carbon capture, and nuclear.
