KIRWAN STATE SCHOOL

- SCHOOLS OF EXCELLENCE

KIRWAN State School prides itself on being an inclusive school, designing programs to target the needs of all students from Prep to Year 6.

Deputy principal Grace Hodges said evidence showed strong academic improvement each year in reading, writing and numeracy for every child at the school.

“Our strength is in our collaborative teamwork,” she said.

“Our strong, professional and dedicated staff meet regularly for targeted professional development and strive to provide a caring, supportive learning environment for all students.”

In 2014, Kirwan State School was acknowledged as an Independent Public School in recognition of the high quality educational opportunities offered to students in the areas of academia, sport, music and citizenship.

“We are current ATSIAP winners, bringing home four trophies, including the overall winning trophy,” Ms Hodges said.

“The school boasts innovative ICT and STEM programs, including targeted enrichment groups, robotics club and resources to support ICT in the curriculum.

“We also have a strong musical culture with whole school musical productions every second year, instrumental programs across Years 1 to 6, fanfare finalists and a dance enrichment group.”

Kirwan State School is also immensely proud of its sporting achievements.

It is current Townsville Primary School Athletics A schools champion, winning the red track competition in 2019, and Queensland state finalist in AFL.

Ms Hodges said their motto resonated strongly within the school.

“We are all safe, respectful, responsible learners — staff, students and families alike,” she said.

“We have a strong community base with a dedicated P and C and many community-related events, including annual colour runs and whole school events to celebrate and commemorate.”

Parents take an active role in the school via its canteen, fundraising (major facilities programs) and direct classroom support in a range of in-class support programs.

Kirwan State School also has an OSHC onsite to support families before and after school, and boasts immaculate and wellmaintained grounds and facilities.

There is a strong sense of belonging and pride in being part of the Kirwan team.

Sex tapes, The Biggest Loser and boxed wine – they’re all touched upon in Urzila Carlson’s new standup special, Overqualified Loser. It drops on Netflix on Tuesday. See Instagram for her regular Who’s Zooming Who chats with Julia Morris and Nazeem Hussain.

I’m always only ever watching Rupaul’s Drag Race. It covers everything I could ever want from television: love, freedom, bitching, wigs and so many willies taped between bum cheeks.

Beyond Burgers. They are the best thing to happen to food. They taste better than meat and they don’t take 660 gallons of water to produce. You get the taste of a filthy burger that isn’t even filthy – and it’s good for you! And the planet. I haven’t eaten meat for most of my life so these developments in plant protein goods are very dreamy for me. Nothing tastes better than ethical smugness. (This answer is not sponsored – although very open to talk sponsorship – Beyond Burgers, feel free to slide into my DMS … )

The instructions to my new favourite card game: Monopoly Deal. It’s based on the board game Monopoly but it’s so much better. I can’t explain how addictive it is. It’s so good. I’m going to go and force my flat mate to play a game with me now.
