It’s on — the maroons versus the Tszyus

- NICK WRIGHT

DEAN Lonergan has boldly predicted the outcome of Jeff Horn’s clash with Tim Tszyu in Townsville, but the latter has very different ideas.

The promoter of the former WBO welterweight champion has declared Horn will take a knockout win in the “fifth or sixth round”.

Lonergan played the fight up on Monday as boxing’s State of Origin.

In his corner the maroon veteran, in the other a young blue eager to stamp his mark on the nation.

“As colours would indicate, this is a Queensland versus NSW fight – the other side will play this down, but we’re from Queensland and we love it,” Lonergan said.

“I’m a Kiwi but I’m 100 per cent a Queenslander … and remember Tszyu equals blue, so we’re looking for a fifth or sixth-round knockout.

“We’re both going to be pushing very hard for a world title fight after this, and if that was to happen we would love to come back to the great city of Townsville and do it right here.”

Matt official announcement of the fight night was the culmination of months of waiting and wondering whether the spectacle would be able to take place.

While there was always hope, the pandemic clouded its possibility.

But now the date was locked in, the stage was set and the pleasantries done with.

It was time for his young star, who defied expectations and ascended through the ranks quicker than he could have imagined, to step up.

“From our perspective it’s been four months of waiting … to be up here, it’s quite spectacular,” Rose said.

“To have a stadium show after 12 months of three or four fights with Tim to get to this point … we didn’t think we would be at a stadium this soon.

“But Tim has excelled in terms of his ability and now at a stage where I think a fight with Jeff Horn will see a spectacular night of boxing.

“I know at one stage 20-odd years ago his father came up here and fought in front of a stadium show and had so much support.

“When Tim wins, hopefully we can get the Queenslanders behind us as well.”
