President wants more voices on future plans

THE new leader of the Charters Towers Chamber of Commerce and Mines is hoping to entice a whole new generation of business people to join the organisati­on.

Gold City Realty owner Tarja Barnes, who herself started a new business in Charters Towers in 2019, was elected president of the business lobby group at the AGM. Ms Barnes (pictured) wants see more businesses into volved in the chamber. “There should be more businesses in the chamber so we have a wide variety of businesses in there sharing their opinions and having their say on the future of Charters Towers,” Ms Barnes said.

“I want to see younger business owners in the chamber, more people welcomed in to be involved.

“The best thing is you don’t have to be a business owner to sign on as a chamber member, it’s about community members who want thrive.”

Ms Barnes said she was keen to see the chamber continue to advocate for developmen­t and advancemen­t of the region.

Chamber members elected a new executive for 2020-21 under the leadership of Ms Barnes. Taking on the position of secretary will be former Charters Towers mayor Liz Schmidt, Arthur Wright remains in the role of treasurer and former president Wayne to see our town

Miller has stepped down into the role of vice-president. Other committee members include Alan Silverwood, Jean Robins, Nola Humphrey, Graham Cotter, Stacey Price, Raylea Thomson and Deborah Crombie.

Chamber meetings are held on the second Thursday of each month.
