Big net gain in a Super result

- MATTHEW ELKERTON EXCLUSIVE

TOWNSVILLE is quickly becoming the sporting capital of Australia with Super Netball confirming a game in North Queensland next month.

The Townsville Entertainment and Convention Centre will host at least one match between Rounds 10-14 with teams yet to be confirmed.

It is understood the city could receive more than one game in the scheduling block.

It is a major win for the city, with Townsville athletes Cara Koenen and Kim Jenner making a name for themselves in the national competition.

The competition was relocated to Queensland in the wake of the COVID-19 second outbreak in the southern states, and will be added to a blockbuster sporting calendar in Townsville.

Townsville MP Scott Stewart will officially announce the upcoming fixture today, with it becoming the first time the Super Netball competition has been played in the city.

It will also be the first game of top tier netball to be played in Townsville since the Australian Diamonds hosted New Zealand in a Constellation Cup clash in 2018.

“This is a great win Townsville,” Stewart said.

“Major events support local businesses and support local for jobs. That’s why we’re working hard to secure more sporting content for Townsville that will help our economic recovery strategy in coming months.

“The people of North Queensland have done a great job fighting coronavirus. That’s why we’re able to host more events.”

The announcement adds to the already busy Townsville events calendar, with the blockbuster Jeff Horn versus Tim Tszyu fight and a Supercars double header already locked in for next week.

“These events will pump millions of dollars into the economy,” Stewart said.

“We support events because they deliver an economic return and support local jobs.”

Tourism Minister Kate Jones said major events would be vital to rebuilding Queensland’s economy.

“Netball has a huge following throughout Queensland and interstate. That’s why we’ve worked hard to ensure Townsville gets a piece of the action,” Ms Jones said.

Suncorp Super Netball CEO Chris Symington said the league was thrilled to be bringing a match to Townsville.

“We know there are lots of Suncorp Super Netball fans right throughout Far North Queensland so we’re excited that the 2020 season has provided the opportunity to bring a game to Townsville,” he said.
