TAYLA’S RISING TO THE CHALLENGE

- TRUDY BROWN

MEDICAL centre worker Tayla Busiko has been named a finalist in the North Queensland region 2020 Queensland Training Awards.

Ms Busiko is one of three trainee graduates vying for the Bob Marshman Trainee of the Year award.

Employed by Gold City Medical Centre, Ms Busiko finished her Certificate II in Business Administration (Medical) in nine months through UNE Partnerships.

She began the traineeship when she started working for the medical centre.

Ms Busiko said her managers wanted her to have the base knowledge and understanding of the responsibilities that were part of the administration role she undertook.

“I’d never done anything like this before,” she said of the study.

“I was working at a supermarket night packing before this.

“It showed I was capable of doing it and you have to have confidence in yourself and confidence in your role.”

She said circumstances had pushed her to get the Certificate III finished quickly and she was thrilled to be named awards.

“I finished it towards the end of last year. I was getting married in March this year and we had to bring the wedding forward,” she said, speaking of her father’s ailing health.

“I didn’t want to be planning a whole new wedding and getting the study done at the same time.

“This is exciting. I’ve never had anything prestigious like this before; it was a good surprise.”

Training and Skills Development Minister Shannon Fentiman congratulated the 221 Queensland finalists and a finalist for the wished them luck awards next month.

“Queensland is home to so many talented students, hardworking teachers, successful training organisations and fantastic employers,” Ms Fentiman said.

“And all of them play an important role in ensuring we have the skilled workforce needed for the jobs now and into the future.

“It’s been a tough year for everyone, but the Palaszczuk Government is committed to backing every Queenslander through quality training opportunities.

“As we unite and recover for Queensland jobs, we for the know that training and skilling will be critical.

“This year’s QTAS will give us the chance to celebrate Queensland’s resilience, talent and success, despite the challenge we have all faced.

“We have a fantastic field of finalists representing different communities, industries and skills.

“We have apprentices in a range of trades, students studying to be drone pilots and people pursuing careers in our important health and community services sectors.”

The North Queensland winners will be announced online on September 11.
