Pole position for spectators as supercars come to town

- MATT TAYLOR

WHEN it comes to the e Supercars, Mark and his s mates have the best seat at in the house, and they y didn’t even have to buy a ticket.

Mark Bromley’s house backs on to Reid Park, so when it’s time for the Supercars to come to town, he gets in the local al scaffolders to build his own private grandstand – in competition with the e neighbours, of course.

Mark’s isn’t quite as high as the one in the yard next to him, but he’s proud of his viewpoint for the big race.

“We all put our heads together every year and work out the cheapest way to put it up and enjoy the day. We’ve done it two years in a row now and next year will be another,” he said.

“It brings a lot of us together. It’s just a really good catch-up time.”

Cheering on from h heights i ht are Mark and his mates, a congregation of motorsports enthusiasts and people from the construction industry.

He’s not the only one in his street taking advantage of their location, with his neighbours setting up in direct competition and a scissor lift ( pictured) in a yard further down.

The lofty position doesn’t only give Mark a scope of the “door handle racing” on track, but also an indication of how locals ar are enjoying th their day.

“It seems to be very fa family orie n t e d . T There’s lots of families an and kids sitti ting on the h hill, enjoying in the cars and an walking pa past,” he said. “I think as well because of this COVID they seem to have more access to the track and it’s bringing everybody to the V8s, which for me makes it a better day. “The cars are rather close coming by and as you can imagine on a street circuit there’s not really a lot of room for overtaking, so it really creates good close racing and good close racing with spectators set up like they are makes for a really good day.”
