It’s a high octane thrill ride for some

- JOHN SMITH FROM KELSO MATT TAYLOR

THRILL seekers took the rare opportunity to get sideways on the Reid Park circuit this weekend with the Hot Wheels Stunt Team providing some high octane entertainment.

Between races, Matt Mingay and Kent Dalton headed out on the track in their drift cars to rev up the crowd, even taking some lucky Townsville locals along for the ride.

Based on the Gold Coast but born in Townsville, Matt loves coming home for the Supercars events, but loves more the reaction of those he takes around the track.

“They kind of know what to expect, but they’re not ready for the power one little bit and when we get sideways,” he said.

“The funniest thing is making them hold their hand out and watching them shaking, 99 per cent of people are shaking.

“Every single passenger is beyond belief happy about it.”

The stunt team normally do between 25 to 30 events a year including supercars events, royal shows and jamborees, but have significantly cut back this year.

While they took a hiatus from the Townsville Supercar event last year, this time around they have come back for both weekends.

With brand new tyres on each car that last just under two laps, Kent’s Holden produces 900 horsepower while Matt’s Camaro is no slouch at 850 horsepower. That’s a whopping 200 horsepower more than a V8 supercar, while weighing 200kg lighter.

Those keen for a lap in the car can get in the passenger seat for $500, with two sessions available per day and limited d spots remaining.
