Attitude the key as Iggy Park chase title

- NICK WRIGHT

A DETERMINED message from Thomas Duffy, after taking down arch rivals Kirwan, epitomised the attitude that is driving Ignatius Park to a title.

“Next week we have to win or this means nothing,” he said.

It spoke to the mentality of the boys in blue in this year’s Aaron Payne Cup, with the side eager to cast aside the disappointment of their semifinal loss in the 2019 campaign.

The star five-eighth has been key throughout the tournament, and he turned in another spectacle when his side dismantled the Bears 24-8.

On the back of their work at training wrestling in the ruck, the extra “four or five seconds” permitted to retreat in defence became a huge factor in Ignatius Park’s dominant win against the reining Cup champions.

But faced with a Cathedral College outfit that tore them apart earlier in the competition, Duffy said an inability to commit for the full 60 minutes would hand them the same fate as last year. “We started pretty poor in the comp and we just wanted to build back, but if we didn’t win that it didn’t really matter,” he said.

“We just want to put it to them (The Cathedral College), just get down there and start well and keep the foot on the pedal. I don’t think they’ll play a worse game than that, so we have to step it up.

“Just get the blue wall call, that’s our call to arms – when someone says it you come together and no one is crossing that line. Simple footy.”

The Townsville sides will play their semi-finals on Wednesday.
