CASTLETOWN’S BREEZY DESIGN Centre enters a new era

- TONY RAGGATT tony.raggatt@news.com.au

THE owners of Castletown shopping centre are going ahead with a $34m redevelopment.

A Coles supermarket and new specialty retailers will be added, along with a new entry statement, upgraded carparking, new parent facilities and a revitalised Playtown.

But the Target department store, originally part of the redevelopment plans, will close.

The work will create about 160 jobs and, once complete, up to 100 new retail jobs.

Mcconaghy Properties

CEO Gary Mcconaghy said they were investing in the centre and Townsville at a critical time, creating jobs and improving facilities to position Castletown as the local shopping centre tailored to the needs of the community.

“Castletown’s fresh food offer at Kings Road Market is a strong drawcard for families and the arrival of Coles will further complement this offer,” Mr Mcconaghy said.

“As part of our $34m redevelopment, we have set ourselves a long-term vision for Castletown that will see the addition of a new Coles supermarket, new entry statement, improved access, upgraded carparking, new parent facilities and a revitalised Playtown.”

Mr Mcconaghy said they were investing in architecture and design that was distinctively Townsville, bringing the outside in with greenery, light and personality.

“This local feel extends to our retailers, existing and new, who represent a mix of unique and iconic independent operators and leading national brands,” he said.

Mr Mcconaghy said despite the far-reaching impacts of COVID-19, the company was committed to Castletown and the Townsville community.

“We will be doing everything possible to forge a successful redevelopment during these challenging operating conditions,” he said.

“There has never been a more important time to support and invest in our retailers and community. In doing so, we are also creating jobs, building confidence and contributing to Townsville’s economic growth in a meaningful and sustainable way.”

A development application has been approved by Townsville City Council.

It originally involved redeveloping the western end of the centre, reconfiguring Target into a smaller format and creating a new supermarket alongside. Mr Mcconaghy said Target and Castletown had since reached an agreement to not renew the lease.

Castletown will remain open for trade throughout the redevelopment, which is scheduled to start in February 2021 and be complete by Christmas next year.
