Grand final fever to hit Bowen

-

THE Bowen Mudcrabs have fought their way into the rugby union grand final and will host the match on home turf.

The Bowen squad secured the grand final spot after putting on an impressive performance during Saturday’s major semi-final against Mackay City at Quarry Hill.

Rain began to fall just before kick-off which meant the first few minutes were pretty scrappy as both teams felt their way into the game with a slippery ball.

The Muddies didn’t let the wet ball get the better of them though, with Nick Poole busting over the line in the corner to put Bowen up 7-0 after just five minutes.

It didn’t take long for City to hit back, and they levelled the scoreline after a big linebreak from their fly half 10 minutes in.

The remainder of the first half was physical, tough footy with both forward packs hitting hard.

Oscar Turner, Lachy Davison and Temone Power led the way for the Bowen forwards, putting on some big shots in defence.

Logan Cross was able to dive over in the corner 10 minutes before the break, but injured his ankle in the process.

The final score was 40-14 to the Muddies.

Wendell Querro scored three best and fairest points, Temone Power scored two and Nick Poole and Maty Jenkins were given one each.

Coach Tom Andison said it was great to see the squad play structured rugby and play well as a team.

The Mudcrabs have a bye this weekend and will host the grand final at the Bowen Sporting Complex on October 3.
