New club blasting its way into the regions

-

A NEW gel blasters club in the Burdekin could be the missing link among the region’s blaster enthusiasts, according to one of the organisers.

The Burdekin Barbarians could be out in the arena as early as the end of this month as the Burdekin’s newest sports club.

Despite still being sometime away from hosting their first event, organiser Tara Holliday said more than 70 locals had already shown interest in being a part of the new club.

“It’s surprisingly piqued a lot of interest. We’re looking to not clash with everybody. I don’t want to make it difficult for some who already plays for a local team,” Ms Holliday said.

“At the moment we are just looking at doing a Saturday, maybe a Sunday.

“(We are) also trying to work in with the mills, so trying to find that day off where everybody can (come along).”

As an outdoor enthusiast, Ms Holliday took up gel blasting and said it was a sport for all ages within guidelines.

“The younger ones I have noticed are more interested in coming to play than playing their Playstations on the weekend,” she said.

“It just adds a link in the chain so now when round robbins happen (it will be) Mackay, Whitsunday, Burdekin, Townsville.

“Once a month to every two months, hopefully if everyone comes to the party.”

Ms Holliday said the new club would be able to shed some light on blasters with the controversy often surrounded by the misuse of them.

“That’s what open days are going to be about, those who are unsure, come in, speak to myself, other guys running it,” she said. “We don’t want to make any body feel pushed away like it’s a secret society or something.”
