ART WORTH WEARING
HEATLEY Secondary College has been recognised for its excellence in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander education.
The North Queensland Wearable Art Project was recently crowned the state winner in the 2020 Showcase Awards for Excellence in Schools.
The official award category the project was contesting was the Queensland Teachers’ Union Showcase Awards for Excellence in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education.
Participating schools in the project were Heatley Secondary College, Heatley State School, Kirwan State High School, Mornington Island State School, Northern Beaches State High School, Spinifex State College – Mount Isa Junior Campus, Thuringowa State High School, William Ross State High School, Wulguru State School, Townsville State High School and Pimlico State High School.
The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Project: People, Culture and Country is an initiative of the Department of Education supported by the Queensland government’s Artists in Residence program.
The project is also funded by the Regional Arts Development Fund to support local arts and culture in regional Queensland and the Townsville City Council through its Artist-in-schools program.
In its first year, the project improved student engagement and attendance rates through visual art in North Queensland secondary schools and grew to include primary schools and rural and remote schools in subsequent years.
Students collaboratively designed, created, published and exhibited pieces of wearable art relating to their Indigenous culture or country.
School attendance and engagement rates improved and the schools saw an increase in students’ self identity and cultural pride, as well as stronger relationships between the students, teachers, parents and the community.
