OCTOBER 13 ERNEST HAYCOX

American author born in 1899. In the US Army in World War I, he then studied journalism before writing stories, mostly about the Wild West, for pulp magazines. He published

,ore than 300 short stories and 12 novels, some of which were adapted to film. He died in 1950 after cancer surgery.

OCTOBER 14 LEONARD BERNSTEIN

American conductor and composer born Louis Bernstein in 1918. He made his debut as a conductor in 1943 and became known for his film music and his score for West Side Story. He died from a heart attack in 1990.

OCTOBER 15 LLUIS COMPANYS

Spanish politician born in 1882. He became president of Catalonia in 1933 and led a Catalan nationalis­t uprising in 1934. Ousted in a coup in 1936 and exiled to France in 1939, he was extradited to Spain in 1940 and executed.

OCTOBER 16 BARBARA BILLINGSLE­Y

American actor born Barbara Combes in 1915. She started on stage before landing a film contract in 1945 and later doing TV shows. She was best known as the mother in the series Leave it to Beaver. She died in 2010.

OCTOBER 17 ADRIAN SCROPE

English politician born in 1601. He fought with the parliament­ary forces in the English Civil War. He was one of the 59 commission­ers who signed the death warrant of King Charles I. When monarchy was restored in 1660 he was hanged, drawn and quartered.

OCTOBER 18 ROBERT DICKERSON

Australian painter born in 1924. Largely self-taught in the 1950s, he became one of the group known as the Antipodean­s, which included Arthur Boyd. He died of cancer in 2010

OCTOBER 19 GEORGE WALLACE

Australian comedian born in 1895. He made his name in variety as part of a double act Dinks and Onkus before going solo. He also appeared in films like The Rats of Tobruk. He died in 1960.
