Centre nominated for Containers for Change awards

- TRUDY BROWN

COMMUNITY engagement and customer focus has earned a Charters Towers recycling company nominations in the Containers for Change Change Maker Awards.

Container refund point Charters Towers Recycling Centre, run by Vanessa Bergersen, is a nominee in two categories.

Charters Towers Recycling Centre has been recognised in both the community engagement and customer focus categories for small to medium businesses.

The recognition has come for the operators at Charters Towers Recycling Centre because they go to great lengths to ensure their team is trained to understand the system.

This allows staff to answer any questions visitors have which ensures a great customer experience for those earning refunds for eligible containers.

The Recycling Centre team also offers a free large bag exchange for customers to help them in their collection and returns.

Charters Towers Recycling Centre also assists in fundraising involving local community groups, including the PCYC, schools and the local tennis and car clubs.

The Containers for Change scheme also provides residents with 10 cent refunds on eligible containers, delivering funds back into Charters Towers and the surrounding community.

Not-for-profit organisation Container Exchange runs the container recycling scheme for the State Government.

Container Exchange chief executive officer Ken Noye said the efforts of Charters Towers Recycling Centre ensured they were a valued part of their community.

“The Containers for Change scheme is now responsible for a 54 per cent decrease in beverage container litter across our state, and the CRP operators play a vitally important part in that,” Mr Noye said.

Thirteen different Change Maker awards will be presented across eight separate categories for both small to medium and large businesses that operate as CRPS in the Containers for Change scheme.
