Rugby to get cash infusion

$2.5m for Hugh St

- CAITLAN CHARLES

THE ageing Hugh St Rugby headquarters will be sent into retirement with a $2.5m redevelopment under an LNP government.

With no female change facilities, worn infrastructure and fields, the venue is in desperate need of a facelift.

Townsville LNP candidate John Hathaway will tomorrow announce the full list of works, which include new change rooms, renovated fields and function spaces.

The investment is part of the LNP’S $68.4m sport infrastructure promise. Townsville and District Rugby Union president Gary Lewis said the original facilities were built in the early 70s and were “below par” and in significant need of overhaul.

“The redevelopment will also address and recognise the modern demographic that plays the sport as there are far more women actively participating now than ever imagined 50 years ago,” Lewis said.

“So along with upgrades to our field lighting and LED efficiency, change rooms, showers and toilet facilities will all get a long overdue update.”

Hathaway said this funding would be a major boost for upand-coming rugby players.

“I want to secure the future of the Hugh St complex and recognise the strength of rugby in Townsville and across North Queensland,” Hathaway said.

“Townsville has more than 3000 registered male and female rugby union players and Hugh St is an important community asset as the headquarters of the Townsville and District Rugby Union, and the home of all finals and representative matches.”

The candidate said he was proud to back the upgrade.

“(It is) an important step forward for rugby in North Queensland,” Hathaway said

LNP leader Deb Frecklington said the funding would boost grassroots sporting clubs.

“We have a plan to provide some of the best local sporting facilities whether you’re a junior having a run around, enjoying a game with your mates or aspiring to reach the elite level,” she said.
