SHOW WON’T GO ON AFTER HORROR FALL

- MATTHEW TAYLOR

ORGANISERS of an event which saw a young woman fall nearly 30m from a ride in Cairns have cancelled plans for their Townsville show.

Detectives are seeking witness videos to pinpoint the moment the 25year-old fell from the Hangover ride at Cairns Showfest, suffering “traumatic” injuries to much of her body, including her spine and head.

Showfest was originally scheduled to visit Townsville on October 15 but was postponed to the first weekend in November before the incident.

The show has since been cancelled. A spokesperson for the event told the Bulletin: “Showfest has decided not to continue with any further events that were planned in Queensland this year.”

Organisers also made the decision to remove their Facebook page,

“whilst people speculate, spread incorrect information, and express opinions, with respect to the lady concerned and her family”.

Detective Senior Constable Elizabeth Stallard said investigators were still seeking witnesses and videos of the incident to help them piece together what led to the woman’s horror fall.

“We are calling for anybody who has vision of that particular ride, when the lady has fallen in particular,” she said.

“We are looking for images of the incident itself and images of people entering the ride.”

The incident is under a joint police and Workplace Health and Safety investigation.

Sen-constable Stallard said officers had yet to interview the woman, who remained in Cairns Hospital in a stable condition.

Organisers released a statement following the incident, saying they were “deeply shocked and saddened … (and) working closely with Cairns Police, WHS, and emergency responders, who are investigating the incident”.
