‘Hard edge’ coach

Georgallis target for Cowboys

- MATTHEW ELKERTON

COWBOYS are ready to place the final piece of their coaching jigsaw puzzle, with the club narrowing in on former Canterbury interim coach Steve Georgallis.

Georgallis, who has doubled as the Greek national coach in recent years, has been a journeyman assistant with stints at the Panthers, Tigers and Bulldogs.

He is a two-time interim coach, taking over mid-season from Matt Elliott at Penrith in 2011 and then again

Dean Pay’s departure Canterbury last season.

He is expected to add a hard edge to a young coaching team led by rookie NRL coach Todd Payten and former Dragons utility Dean Young.

Georgallis coached the Bulldogs reserve grade side to the NSW Cup and the NRL State Championship with a 42-18 thrashing of the Redcliffe Dolphins. after from

Cowboys head of football Micheal Luck said the club had tabled an offer to Georgallis and was expecting a response by the end of the week.

“We would like to hope that late in the week we have everything done, we want to have everything in place before November 1,” Luck said.

“We think he has a wonderful temperament which will work in with our squad and the other coaches we have on board. We have a young football department and he brings terrific experience.

“He has done a wonderful job when handed the reins most recently at Canterbury but also at Penrith. The knowledge and experience he brings to that spot would be invaluable.

“We have an idea of where we want to take this football club next season, and we have an idea of the people who are going to take us there.”

It is understood conversations have been positive with Georgallis, with a verbal agreement in place.

The coach remains in Sydney and will need to quarantine for two weeks before the Cowboys pre-season, which is expected to start on November 16.

Luck would not disclose the length of contract on offer for Georgallis, but it is expected to be a three-year deal.

“I know quite a few people at Penrith and he comes with good raps,” Luck said.
