MEATING THE VOTERS
VOTERS are being urged to roll up at a local primary school and get their democracy sausage for a worthy cause.
The parents and citizens group at Townsville South State School will be selling sausages, rolls and cakes to help raise funds for the school’s new bush tucker garden trail.
“It not only helps our school get muchneeded funds for these type of projects, but it also helps promote our school,” Townsville South State School P&C committee member Emily Blumson said.
“When people come here and see what we’ve done with the beautiful kitchen garden and feel the lovely environment that it is, it’s good publicity for our school.”
The school has an enrolment of about 140 students and is cultivating the Indigenous bush tucker garden to complement its existing garden.
The work is being done to help replace a treasured natural feature of the school that had to be removed for safety reasons.
“We have very old, massive fig trees along there that were over 100 years old,” Ms Blumson said.
“Unfortunately they had to be cut down because they had a disease and it was unsafe to leave them.”
It’s not just snags that the school will be serving up today.
Voters will also be able to grab a serving of cake, bacon and egg rolls and biscuits.
“Any money we make from the democracy sausage, cake stall, will pay for the plants and infrastructure for the garden paths,” Ms Blumson said.
“We were a bit uncertain right up until a couple of weeks ago, so it’s been a bit hectic to organise it all at the last minute.
“We’ve got beautiful homemade cake, biscuits and loafs made ready to go.
“We’ve got some gluten-free options as well and vegan options for our cake stall.”
