The boys have dominated the Cup over the years, and it was the Australian-trained gelding Vow And Declare who added to that record last year. Stallions have delivered on the big day the most, with seven lining up in the 2020

edition alongside 13 geldings. Verry Elleegant headlines a group of four mares in the race. The great Makybe Diva’s third triumph in 2005 was the last time a mare took home the Cup.

NN It’s been a race for the bays and another 13 of them will meet the starting gun on Tuesday, including the race favourite Anthony Van Dyck. A trio of chestnuts — Vow And Declare, Finche and Warning — will be there. Greys will have a noticeable absence from the field.

NN 3 — The three-year-olds have won 23 Melbourne Cups, but there are none this year to add to that tally.

4 — There are five four-yearolds in this year’s race, with Aidan O’brien’s foreign radar Tiger Moth among them. This age group is most popular, having won the race 46 times.

5 — It’s been a five-year-old’s Cup on 44 occasions and eight of them will take part in this year’s edition of the race, including last year’s winner Vow And Declare and the favourite Anthony Van Dyck.
