Now they’re cooking!

Retail and industrial leasing markets recovering after collapse

- TONY RAGGATT

A YOUNG family from Myanmar is setting up shop in Hermit Park, providing a choice of popular Thai, Chinese and Japanese dishes for lunch and dinner.

It will be the first business venture of cook Tina Nwe, who will operate Win Noodles with her husband Aung, while her sister Winny will also help out.

Ms Nwe said her family operated a restaurant in Myanmar. She chose the name for this business because it is her son Austin’s second name.

She has been in Australia for about 10 years working in food stores like Noodle Box.

“I’ve been working for other people for 10 years. I want to try on my own,” Ms Nwe said.

The restaurant will provide dine-in or takeaway, selling soups, noodles like pad thai and Singapore noodles and stir fries with Mongolian beef and crispy pork belly.

Ms Nwe said she hoped her shop’s position next to a bottle shop at the corner of Kings Road and Bayswater Road would mean people buying takeaway liquor might also stop to buy her meals.

Colliers International executive Shaun Mclaren said the Kings Road shop had great parking and exposure to passing traffic and the store had a good fit-out that suited the business.

“It will be a great fit for the area and the complex which offers a variety of food options,” Mr Mclaren said.

He said the leasing market was showing improvement.

“This is a good example of the activity in the retail market where people are willing to open new businesses,” he said.

“Townsville has been more fortunate than other places because we have been able to trade through to some extent.”

Colliers say the leasing market collapsed when COVID-19 restrictions were introduced earlier this year but has recovered with the industrial market the strongest sector.
