Sniffer dogs to help police
POLICE sniffer dogs, local detectives and Australian Border Force have teamed up to detect illegal drugs, cash and firearms being transported by mail to Ayr.
The detection efforts took place last Thursday with Border Force officers from Cairns and Bowen attending.
Criminal Investigations Branch officer Senior Constable Nick Bach said while some packages raised the attention of sniffer dogs, no charges were laid to date.
“We’ve been working with (the dog squad and Australian Border Force) and an opportunity arose to utilise their services which we will continue to do in the future,” Senior Constable Bach said.
EXTORTION CHARGES
A 22-year-old Burdekin woman has been charged with five counts of extortion and one of unlawful stalking and released on conditional police bail to appear in Ayr Magistrates Court on November 12.
BURGLARY ATTEMPT
At 7pm on Saturday, October 24, Ayr Police were conducting investigations into recent burglary offences when they located a 16-year-old male at a residence in Ayr. He was charged with three counts of attempted burglary and two counts of wilful damage.
TOURIST NABBED
At 1am on Wednesday, October 28, Ayr Police intercepted a vehicle in Young Street, Ayr.
The driver, a 30-year-old tourist, was issued a notice to appear for drink-driving, .208, and will face Ayr Magistrates Court on November 23.
ASSAULT CHARGES LAID
At 7.15pm on October 29, Ayr Police were conducting investigations into a complaint of assault when they located a 34year-old Burdekin man. As a result of those investigations, he was issued a notice to appear for one count of assault occasioning bodily harm. He will face Ayr Magistrates Court on December 7.
DISQUALIFIED DRIVER
At 4.10pm on November 2, Ayr Police intercepted a car in Mackenzie Street, Ayr. The driver, a 20-year-old Majors Creek man, was issued a notice to appear for disqualified driving and will face Ayr Magistrates Court on November 9.
