WATCH IT LIVE

-

TOWNSVILLE residents are being encouraged to observe Remembrance Day in a different way amid ongoing COVID-19 restraints.

With normal events slashed, Townsville City Council will present the commemoration ceremony in a live stream. A ceremony at Townsville War Cemetery, attended by dignitaries and invitees only, will be streamed from 10.30am.

Townsville SubBranch member Paul Willis said it was unfortunate that the national day reserved to honour and pay tribute to the fallen men and women of the

Australian Defence Force could not continue as usual. He said he hoped more people than usual would observe the occasion by having the official ceremony streamed on the big screen at all

RSLS in Townsville.

“We’re encouraging people to do three things – watch the live stream, take a moment away from work for a minute of silence and, if you can, go down and support the local RSLS,” he said. “Traditionally, people will observe a minute’s silence but the live stream has allowed an extra educational element.”

Mr Willis said it was important to keep the spirit of Remembrance Day alive regardless of any changes to the way it was delivered, and he encouraged people to take a moment to reflect on its meaning.

“I remember the people I know,” he said. “I consider the sacrifice ... it brings meaning to those who have gone before, and especially back to the heritage of Remembrance Day in World War I.”
