TOP SCORE FOR MENDI

- TONY RAGGATT

A TOWNSVILLE company has taken out one of the state’s prestigious Earth Awards for its work on the Queensland Country Bank Stadium.

Mendi Group was announced the winner of the category for projects valued between $30m and $75m at the Civil Contractors Federation Queensland awards held at Warner Bros Movie World, Gold Coast.

The awards recognise excellence in civil construction including construction management, innovation, and environmental and social management.

Mendi constructed numerous works packages in the new Townsville stadium.

It was the first contractor on site and one of the last to leave, spending 30 months on the property, completing over 101,000 hours injury free.

Initially engaged to complete a small bulk earthworks package, Mendi went on to complete almost $40m of works including underground services and the field of play. Mendi’s operations manager and project manager for the stadium, Natasha Doyle, said to take out first place in one of the higher categories of the awards was truly humbling and rewarding for the Mendi team.

The construction industry competed in categories ranging from $2m to more than $75m.

“The Queensland Country Bank Stadium is a signature project for the North Queensland region and one that Mendi is proud to have been instrumental in delivering,” Ms Doyle said.

Mendi’s managing director, Jeffrey Doyle, said: “This project is testament to how far we have come as a local contractor in our 60 years.

“It not only reflects the growth of our business but also the growth and opportunity within the region.

“In the past, opportunities for local contractors on projects of this size and magnitude have been few and far between with preference typically given to tier 1 national companies.

“I would like to commend the state government and Townsville City Council for their focus on local industry and for providing Mendi the opportunity to prove our capability and shine on the national stage.

“We hope that through our exposure in receiving this award it will allow for more businesses like ours to be given opportunities.

“We are certainly thankful that we could showcase our ability on the centre stage of what is the biggest project North Queensland has had for many years.”
