Drive to conditions, look for roadworks

- MIKAYLA MAYOH

POLICE are urging drivers to remain cautious around roadworks after three separate incidents occurred in the same area in recent weeks.

Ayr Police officer-in-charge Senior Sergeant Steve Barton said the roadworks between Ayr and Home Hill had already resulted in two nose-totail crashes and one car sideswiping another.

“Generally, these types of traffic crashes occur due to lack of judgment, concentration and/or distraction,” Sergeant Barton said.

“When driving through roadworks, concentration levels should be heightened due to changes road markings, queuing or stopped traffic, changes to where you can drive, road machinery and road workers moving about their work site and sometimes frequent changes in speed limits.”

Sergeant Barton called for drivers to exercise patience and pre-plan their travels where roadworks may be occurring.

“By driving to the conditions, keeping a proper lookout, obeying road rules and not being fatigued when driving, the likelihood of being involved in a crash diminishes considerably,” Sergeant Barton said.
