MAN ARRESTED AFTER CAR FLIPS OVER
A DRAMATIC arrest unfolded in Townsville after an alleged driver of a smashed car returned to the crash scene in North Ward yesterday.
Emergency services found the white SUV flipped on its roof with its windows smashed outside Hotel Allen on Eyre Street at about 9.30am.
District Duty Officer Senior Sergeant Matt Lyons said there were no occupants at the scene upon arrival.
Sergeant Lyons said early investigations suggested an unfortunate
N
miscalculation might be to blame for the crash. “It could be a combination of speed, angle, and just misfortune here that the vehicle has rolled,” Sergeant Lyons said.
“It’s certainly something you can try probably 50 times and never have happen, but this morning it has.
“It’s probably just a warning for members of the public that when reversing be mindful of your driving techniques and be mindful of your surroundings, and do it carefully.”
The alleged driver and owner of the SUV returned while emergency services
were still on scene, with the Bulletin there to capture it. The man, who had blood stains on his pants and appeared to have a leg injury, could be heard saying he was not involved in the crash.
Police officers arrested the man, who was then transported to a nearby police station after refusing to do a breath and alcohol test. “Inquiries have established that he is the owner of the vehicle and we believe he was driving the vehicle at the time,” Sergeant Lyons said. “I can inform you that advice from police on scene is that the male appears to be grossly affected by liquor.”
