A MOTHER was laughed at by teenagers sitting in her husband’s stolen car when she confronted them on a street.

Fay Steyne said teenagers broke into her Mount Louisa home early on Sunday morning while she was asleep in the lounge, causing her to stir.

She woke to find her husband’s white Subaru Outback missing, along with their keys and wallets.

“I could hear them,” she said. “They were already in the house and I thought I was lucky not to get up.”

Ms Steyne spotted the car later in the day and attempted to follow it.

“They were laughing when we caught them at Santa

Lucia Drive,” she said. “We saw our car in front of us with our own eyes. We live in Mount Louisa, why drive back?”

She said the thieves, who were stopped less than three minutes away from her home, drove off without regard.

Despite their young age, Ms Steyne said the teenagers inside her husband’s car appeared to be accomplished

drivers. “They drive really good in the car,” she said.

Ms Steyne said the teenagers were later spotted at various locations around Townsville. She contacted police numerous times with the car’s location but it still remains on the loose.

Police investigations are ongoing but no arrests have been made.

Ms Steyne said the thieves cut through her screen door before using a wrench to force open the door.

The incident follows a spate of thefts in Townsville.

Police data shows more than 50 properties were targeted by thieves last week. In many instances tools were used to gain entry, allowing thieves to get away with vehicles and other possessions.
