ATHLETE THROWS HAT INTO THE RING

- CAITLAN CHARLES

A SECOND candidate has put their hand up for the Division 10 council by-election to replace longstanding politician Les Walker.

Asti Poole, who came third in the March local government elections, will contest the division, alongside runner-up Woodstock grazier Fran O’callaghan.

Mr Walker was elected as the Mundingburra MP, which Coralee O’rourke vacated, at the October 31 state election.

By law, Mr Walker’s position was supposed to go to the candidate in second place – Ms Callaghan. But the state government has advised the Local Government Association of Queensland it intends to reverse the law change, which came into affect in October.

It is unclear when the by-election will be held and the formal process has not started.

A former Paralympian and Commonwealth Games shot-put medallist, Ms Poole believes a move into council would be a “right fit”.

“I’ve lived here for 17 years, you can see what is happening and what has been neglected,” Ms Poole said.

“I’ve had a lot of support before, I was well known 20 years ago … I was hit by a drunk driver and paralysed … I did a lot of good for the community.”

Division 10, which is one of the largest Townsville City Council divisions, encompasses Railway Estate, Idalia and down to Woodstock.

Ms Poole said she would be happy to work with Townsville Mayor Jenny Hill, but would fight for her community.

“I’m not scared to make a statement or give my opinion.

“I can stand up to others that are too shy to say anything or nor wanting to say anything. I can speak on their behalf,” she said.

Ms O’callaghan has already said she intends to contest the byelection, but is disappointed the current legislation is not being adhered to. “The ECQ have advised in the media they do not believe any by-elections can be held until early next year,” Ms O’callaghan said.

“This means I must be installed as councillor for Division 10 prior to any legislative changes.” The current legislation would have Ms O’callaghan sworn in as Division 10 councillor.
