Steeling for the next level
Warehouse allows expansion
A One-time apprentice who took over the business where he trained as a sheet metal worker is taking it to the next level after buying a quality twolevel industrial warehouse in Garbutt.
Ashley Hollins operates Townsville Stainless Steel with his partner, Rachael.
They have acquired 331 Bayswater Road, which features a 610sq m high clearance clear span warehouse and 115sq m office on a 1185sq m site zoned core industry.
Ashley said they had previously operated on two adjoining leased properties, also in Garbutt, and took the opportunity to relocate to one site.
“In the end, we found something we can pay off is cheaper than paying rent,” he said.
Rachael said the property gave them the room to continue to grow.
“Our long-term goal is to be known and associated as the stainless steel, aluminium and general fabrication specialist in Townsville,” she said.
Ashley did his apprenticeship with Stephen Fry, buying out his boss in 2013.
Now the semi-retired boss, who has worked in the steel industry in Townsville for almost 50 years, is back working part-time for his one-time apprentice.
Stephen said he didn’t play golf or go fishing so retirement wasn’t so appealing, while Ashley is happy to have an experienced hand.
“Stephen has been a mentor,” he said.
Townsville Stainless services Townsville and
Steel surrounding areas including western Queensland, the Whitsundays, Burdekin and Hinchinbrook.
Despite COVID-19. Ashley said they were busy serving clients in hospitality, marine, government, agriculture and construction.
“There’s not enough hours in the day,” he said.
E-property Consultants NQ sales and leasing agent Steve Whaling said the Bayswater Road property was a prime location that would be further enhanced by a Liberty fuel station nearing completion next door and the imminent launch of Sydney Tools across the road.
“With interest rates at an alltime low, we are seeing an increased take-up of vacant properties by owner-occupiers, which is a positive sign for the local market,” Mr Whaling said.
