BURDEKIN KEEPS TUNE WITH CAROLS

- MIKAYLA MAYOH

THE Burdekin is shirking big sister Townsville’s Grinch-like behaviour and telling locals to come all ye faithful to the region’s Christmas Carols.

The Townsville City Council has cancelled the local carols due to COVID-19, but the Burdekin will host their event with two popular country musicians headlining the event. Tickets are available from today and are free, but spots have to be booked for the Sunday, December 13 event, featuring James Blundell

and Jade

Holland.

Council Mayor Lyn Mclaughlin said while introducing bookings seemed tedious, it was necessary to host a large-scale, in-person event that fans of carols have become accustomed to.

“The Burdekin is one of very few councils hosting in-person Christmas Carols this year, complete with some of

North Queensland’s best food trucks and market stalls, thanks to the dedication and hard work of staff ensuring the event follows all National Cabinet and Queensland Health guidelines,” Cr Mclaughlin said. “While the event remains free, all audience members will have to book a spot – whether they’re six months or 60 years old.”

Townsville City Council has announced they would not hold an in-person event, instead hosting a Carols @ Home virtual show.

Cr Mclaughlin said virtual elements would be introduced into the Burdekin’s 2020 event.

“Plans are already under way to introduce a number of ‘virtual’ elements to the 2020 event, allowing us to be visited by other guests who may not be able to make it in person. I look forward to welcoming James and Jade to the bountiful Burdekin, and urge all residents to book their tickets now,” she said.

The 2020 Burdekin Community Christmas Carols will be held at the Home Hill State High School fields from 5.30pm on Sunday, December 13.

Tickets are free but must be booked at burdekintheatre.com.au
