second HMAS Sydney and the German raider Kormoran fight an hour-long battle 240km west of Shark Bay, Western Australia. Both vessels are stricken. The Sydney is on fire but moves slowly away. Most of the Kormoran crew survive and are picked up, but the Sydney and all 645 men aboard disappear.
